The series begins with an evening of dynamic music in the much respected and established jazz format of piano trio. Much like the established classical string quartet, the instrumentation might be well known, but what can be created, expressed and exuded from a group of capable musicians covers the gamut of music itself. Both of these groups promise to bring that spectrum to Dazzle.

BakTrak
BakTrak began in college with the impetus of Ben Markley writing a body of new piano trio music. Both he and bassist Martin Kenney had completed jazz studies degrees (at CU and UNC respectively) and were eager to put their musical energies into a band experience. Drummer Art Lande enjoyed the trio format with the group Triangle, and with the formation of BakTrak, is anticipating another great experience. Their rehearsal process involves original composition, jazz standards tailored to the band's energy esthetic, and improvisations heavily drenched in jazz rhythm coloration and language. This will be their premiere performance.

Personnel: Ben Markley (piano), Martin Kenney (bass), Art Lande (drums)

Cuddle
The Cuddle band has resumed with renewed vigor, as a result of Amy Shelley's return to Boulder after a one year hiatus in New York City. The Band has added an infusion of new repertoire. Intriguing pieces from modern jazz masters including Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, George Cables, the Jazz Crusaders' Wilton Felder, and some Art Lande originals. The group's surprising and spacious improvisations live in a contactful environment that draws the audience into their circle.

Personnel: Art Lande (piano), Juli Royster (bass), Amy Shelley (drums)

Compositions from each of Markleyʼs two albums have earned him ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Awards. Add the duality of the unique, 70's jazz sound with Cuddle's, expansive improvisations and this certainly a winning doubleheader. Get your tickets, find your seats, order some food and drink, then take it all in at Dazzle as Art Lande Presents BakTrak and Cuddle. Sunday, September 4th, 6:30PM.`

They have visited California, Texas, Ohio, Wyoming, Tennessee and Oregon playing concerts and giving clinics and workshops. They mostly play their original compositions, plus music of their contemporaries like Fred Hirsch, Dave Phillips, and Paul Grabowski. Art Lande Peter Sommer Quartet
In second set, the duo is transformed into a quartet by including longtime cohorts Paul Romaine and Mark Simon, Denver's top notch rhythm section. They will feature selected works of Jazz Masters Woody Shaw, Andrew Hill and Bobby Hutcherson, all musicians that Art played with in the 1970's era, San Francisco Jazz scene. This adventuresome repertoire is underplayed, but this exhilarating, expressive, masterful band will make you believe you were there in the middle of it all.
